CP Okon Effiong Okon Prevents Flight Cancellation at Port Harcourt Airport Amid Worker Strike

The Port Harcourt Airport is still operating flights, despite an ongoing strike, thanks to the intervention of the Commissioner of Police for Rivers State Command, CP Okon Effiong Okon.

Yesterday, April 18, 2023, a meeting was held between the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Okon Effiong, and various representatives of aviation workers’ unions at the Command Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The purpose of the meeting was to broker a truce in the two-day warning strike that had been declared by the aviation workers.

In attendance were notable figures such as Com. Matthew Olabe, State Secretary NLC, Com. Chris Igwe, Member NLC, Com. Rasaq Animasaun, Chairman ATSSSAN/TUC Auditor, Com. Akagha Emmanuel, Chairman ANAP FAAN Chapter, Com. Ohwoefe Felix, Chairman, NUATE FAAN Chapter, and Com. Ogakun Chigioge, Secretary, ANAP FAAN Chapter.

During the meeting, CP Effiong appealed to the striking workers to call off the warning strike, citing the state’s recent experiences with political tensions and its potential to cause further socio-economic and political woes. He emphasized that any actions that could cause apprehension among the people or lead to a breach of peace should be avoided.

In response, the labor leaders acknowledged that the strike was a national directive, but assured the CP that activities at the airport would not be disrupted by their members. Ultimately, the meeting ended on a positive note with a resolution for continued dialogue between the parties involved.
