SENATE: ORJI UZOR KALU WILL RECEIVE FULL SENATORIAL ENTITLEMENTS WHILE IN PRISON

The senate has disclosed that Orji Uzor Kalu, the current Chief Whip and senator representing Abia North, is still a standing senator and will be paid full salaries and other entitlements in prison as he is still a serving senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The senate made this known through the senate spokesperson, Godiya Akwashiki, on Sunday.

The senate spokesperson also disclosed that Orji Uzor Kalu’s seat is still vacant and nothing in the constitution states otherwise. He further stated that the seat will remain vacant until the former Governor of Abia state has appealed to the Supreme court and has exhausted all the legal options available with no success. He further reiterated that even the president cannot declare Orji’s seat vacant as it is against the law.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (alongside his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited) was convicted on Thursday, 5th December, by the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court for embezzlement and money laundering, and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He is currently held in custody at the Ikoyi prisons, Lagos.
