The Nigerian police has dismissed a Lagos state policeman accused of shooting an unarmed civilian. the suspect, sergeant Lukman Akanbi, shot a harmless Ramon Babatunde Adeniyi who was outside the premises of Starboy live-in concert, Eko Atlantic Energy City at Victoria Island, following a heated argument between the duo.
This incident was reported to have taken place in the early hours of the morning as verified by the clips of the incidents circulating the internet. The victim was subsequently rushed to Naval Dockyard Hospital where the doctor on duty confirmed him dead.
The disgraced officer is facing murder charges and is detained at the Provost Department, Command Headquarters in Ikeja. According to spokesperson for the police in Lagos, Bala Elkana, Sgt Akanbi was further arraigned before the Adjudicating Officer on three counts charge of Discreditable Conduct contrary to Paragraph E (3) First Schedule, Unlawful and Unnecessary Exercise of Authority contrary to Paragraph Q (2), and Damage to Articles contrary to Paragraph D (1), Police Act and Regulations, Cap 370 LFN 1990.
He condemned the policeman’s actions and deemed it unprofessional. He also disclosed that the supervisory officers of defaulting cops will be held responsible for the any professional misconduct of officers under them. He believes that upholding such measures will help curb incidents of professional misconduct and engendered accountability in the system.
Meanwhile, the policeman has been found guilty and awarded the penalty of dismissal from the force.
