What Do You Gain In Sharing Fake Stories?

Twitter is one of my favourite social media platforms. I love Twitter because it helps me stay updated on happenings in Nigeria and around the world. With Twitter, sometimes I don’t on my TV for weeks because every news story is televised on Twitter and it’s real time.

The best Twitter tool for me is the trends. That’s where the conversations happen.

So yesterday, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala was trending. She is one woman I love and respect so much so I quickly check to know why one of my favourite woman in the world was trending. Surprisingly, it was about her appointment as the new Director-General of World Trade Organization. Meanwhile, I have been following her progress in the race and I know that they will announce the new DG in two weeks time.

Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala only made it to the final stage for World Trade Organisation Director-General election.

But people, including those you expected to have sense by default joined the copy and paste gang to spread fake news about her appointment as the new Director-General of WTO.

How did we get here?

It’s okay to celebrate the fact that she and South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee are the final two candidates to lead the WTO — which has never had a woman serve as director-general in its 25-year history.

According to reports, her chances of becoming the new DG of WTO is higher than her competition.

This should make us proud. But congratulating her and making it look as if she’s won already is something i’m struggling to understand.

Or did Malians dumped their leader for Ngozi Okonjo Iweala after they felt he disappointed them by going live on Instagram with the NPF and resorting to dialogue instead of going ahead with their planned protest?

The last time I checked, Aunt Ngozi had “mannaz”. Maybe I was washing periwinkle for Afang Soup when the gist dropped.

Somebody should update a brother, mbok.

Jokes aside, when we are done with #EndSARS campaigns, #NoFakeNews should be next.
